Bharti dancing her way to Bollywood

Television’s very own ‘Lalli’ — stand-up comedienne Bharti Singh — has her hands full with work. After tickling the audiences’ funny bones for many years now, this famous stand-up comedian is all set to move one step further. Bharti would next be seen as a participant on dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Ja — Season 5, which will go on air mid- June and would also be starring in Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film, Khiladi 786.

The Amritsar girl says dance has always been a hobby, and so she is both excited and nervous about being a part of the show.

“I have always loved dancing. Even in the TV show, Comedy Circus, I used to always come dancing while opening my acts. Now, when I am getting a chance to pursue my hobby further, I could not have said no,” shares Bharti, while talking to HT City over the phone from Mumbai, amidst her busy shooting schedules.

Besides her love for dancing, what motivated Bharti to be a part of the show was that she would be one among various celebrities from diverse fields — all non-dancers. And leaving no stone unturned, the girl with the funny bone is putting in a rigorous five hours a day to rehearsing, apart from shooting for the film as well as Comedy Circus.

“For me, comedy is easier, so I am trying to give more time to dancing. Since I had been associated with sports during college, my choreographer often says that I have a flexible body, which helps me. People have seen me as a comic star and as an actor, but now I want to show them that I am a dancer as well,” shares Bharti, who was also seen in television serial Pyar Mein Twist, which aired on Star Plus.

So, would the comedy queen now become a dancing queen? “I hope so,” she smiles, “Since Punjabis have always loved and supported me, I hope that they would continue to do so and give me loads of love and votes,” adds the 26-year-old.

Talking about her role in the film, Khiladi 786, the actor says, “I play a press reporter who disguises herself as a maid to work at the residence of a gangster, played by Mithun Chakraborty.”
Being a household name now, one presumes Bharti must be bombarded with offers from Punjabi cinema.

But the comic star would much rather be selective, she shares. “Comedy Circus is my bread and butter, and I don’t want to do injustice to it. Whenever I am approached for a film, I always tell them that I cannot take out more than a few days.” 

The last few years have seen Bharti work day and night for her acts and shows, but the actor doesn’t repent, saying instead that she loves this phase of her life, for she believes youth is the age meant for working.

“The last four years have changed my life. But I feel sad that nobody says that they want to become a comedian. The fact is that a comedian can never flop,” she signs off.
